THE BUDDHA IN THE ATTIC by Julie Otsuka

Links for East Side Readers Discussion
Julie Otsuka reads from The Buddha in the Attic at the 2011 National Book Award Finalists (7 minutes); she reads here too, for 2 minutes only, and she's way less nervous.

My group (all 2 of us) was impressed with the use of the third person plural with individual names only being introduced on "Last Day". We explored her "extensive research to give the idea of colletive voices instead of one main character". Ron Charles of the Washington Post raised the possible criticism "it never reallly challenges the prejudice that made their internment necessary," which we dismissed as not being the purpose of her book. Her family members were interred. Interesting how only the Amerians speak at the end as if all those people were forgotten. Since we were incapable of understanding, or even trying to understand, their culture, there wasn't much assimilation... what has changed now... not much I fear. We both felt more educated on the whole period because of the read and the study on our parts that it led to. Good choice! So far I am hearing great feedback on Rules of Civility.
