1984 by George Orwell

Continuing in a classic vein, we'll be discussing George Orwell's 1948 classic 1984

Why Orwell Matters by Christopher Hitchens is available, as well as Orwell's first book, Down and out in Paris and London, autobiographical, the Nickel & Dimed of the 1930s.

Here's a link to the Open Directory's Orwell page, which also has separate 1984 links, including an online searchable version, complete with quizzes and lesson plans, which are way better than readers' guides. Oh, and don't miss the vintage 1984 Apple computer commercial broadcast during that year's Super Bowl & often considered the best commercial ever made. There was a mediocre movie in 1956 and a doubleplusgood movie in 1984, and the Eurythmics soundtrack for it, mostly left on the cutting room floor....
**This essay by Orwell, "Politics and the English Language," from 1946 is a must-read for this book and for all reading and writing that you ever do!! ***
